Curing diseases.
Knowing what causes diseases is the key to finding cures. For instance, deficiency
diseases, which arise because important substances like vitamin C and iodine are
not present in food in sufficient quantities, are cured by identifying what the
deficiency is and then by providing the necessary substance. Infections caused
by bacteria can be cured by antibiotics,
which are designed to kill the bacteria while doing little or no harm to the body.
